What does it really mean? Is it just for big companies?
The answer is no - It's not just for big companies. A management systems, to make it simple, it's a set of consistent procedures that exist in a certain activity, so the final output is achieved also in a consistent way.
Some companies may already have a management system without even knowing it. Others just "go with the wind" and don't have a constant or consistent way to act. This last type of companies don't have a management system.
A company does not have to be BIG in order to have a consistent way to do it's daily work. In fact, we do have some 1 or 2 working people companies as clients that run with a consistent Management Systems and even have them certified. And they do it quite well.
ISO establishes some good practices and guidelines for companies that want to develop and improvement they're management systems. For instance, one that is considered a basic management system is ISO9001 - The Quality Management System. Knowing that you buy a product or service from a company that adopts a management system or an ISO9001 management systems, gives you the confidence that your purchase is beeing server in a consistent way. The chances of it going wrong decrease drastically.
Buying from others... good luck. It may go right. It may go wrong. The final result is as inconsistent as they're management style.
