All over the world, we assist to the trend of developing non disciminatory practices.
In fact, it makes perfect sense. No one should be discriminated based on gender, religious believes, race, sexual orientation or any other reason.
Is your business based on selling "Gender" (we hope not)? No? So you should focus on competence instead of gender.
In your business, the sexual orientation of the employye is provided as a service (again we hope it's not)? No? So you should focus on competence instead of sexual orientation.
Why should you focus on competence? Because it's competence your business sells to the client. Not the "discriminated" features. They are not related!!!
But what if you are obligated to develop a Policy of Non Discrimination?
If you develop this Policy, you are assuming that this discriminatory features are in fact considered in your company and therefore you had to make the rule to control it. In the end you are discriminating.
You write a Policy to protect a minority and automaticaly you make it official that they are a minority and this "minority question" makes them different as HR.
Let me tell how things work here, at Quality Evaluation Center (some remarks, not all):
- Gender: We don't care about your gender. But I must say that while writting this, I did some checking. Females are 75%+ at our company. We provide conformity evaluation to our clients. Not "male" conformity evaluation of "female" conformity evaluation. And the facts of the analisys will not be influenced.
- Race: The color of your skin it's not something that may influence your capabilities. Otherwise my capacities in the summer would be different from winter. It doesn't happen. A permanent tan makes no difference.
- Religion: Pray to whatever you want. Do it on your free time and don't affect your colleagues. Don't bring it to work. Don't be a fanatic (that we will not allow and will discriminate). If you keep it like this, we don't care about your religion (I won't tell you mine :D).
- Sexual orientation: Don't bring it to work. At our company and sector, sexual questions are not listed in the services provided. So don't bring it If you bring it, we will kick you out. And it will happen no matter what your orientation is. And remenber: we don't care about orientation nor the "freaky" habits you may have. Just don't do it while working.
- Age: Well, I'm getting older. A few weeks ago a new person camed to work with us. With 21 years old, I could be this persons father. Someone who discriminates over age it's building a grave for himself.
